Europe on Fire

By Peter Bower

With all the good news emanating from the U.S. economy, it’s hard to understand all the stock market volatility.  We’ve just had four straight months of over 250,000 new jobs created.  The Christmas selling season was one of the best in years.  The economy is almost certainly growing at over 3%, yet the stock market has been very jittery.

The stock market sold-off with the start of the New Year.  This is understandable, because investors had another good year and may have wanted to take some profits; perhaps do a little rebalancing.  By waiting until after January 1, the taxes do not come due until April 15, 2016; but why the additional volatility with such good news?

Europe with is homegrown terrorism and economic instability is again worrisome.  Unfortunately, we have been through this before.  This time should be no different in that its impact here will minimal; but it does make investors nervous.  We have stated before that Europe will take years to work through its many issues.  In the meantime, the fundamentals here keep getting better.

Stay steady, my friends.
