Discussions of artificial intelligence are most often about how many positives it will bring. However, it will also wreck some businesses and professions. At the very least, changes will be so profound that many will not be able to adjust and adapt. Think of anything that is basically routine or rules-based. AI can do it faster, better, and cheaper.
Tax returns, legal documents, medical pathology, perhaps some surgeries using robotics, driving, flying, just to name a few. Companies providing these services must change drastically. Individuals in the endeavors will be displaced. Some firms and individuals will be able to survive by moving up the value-added scale, but that may only work for a short while. We have to expect that this technology’s capabilities will advance very quickly. It already has, and it will accelerate. Machine learning will compound with experience.
Will investment managers become obsolete? That is possible, but people may still want to deal with people. However, some of the guts of what we do may eventually be done better and more consistently by AI. We shall see. In the meantime, the Bull and his partners will seek profit for our clients from this change. We will also attempt to avoid the buggy whip providers of today’s world. Stay steady my friends. It will be interesting!
