Quiet Period

By Peter Bower

Before companies report earnings, they are bound by quiet period rules. They cannot make any comments that would announce pertinent information beforehand regarding their earnings report. There is a period before and after when this applies. Since most companies are reporting their second quarter earnings soon, little real information is available about their performance or prospects. This leads to much conjecture, useless commentary, and sometimes speculation in the stock market. Ignore most of it; it is noise. Once earnings are announced, along with any guidance about their prospects, then investors can make more informed decisions. Wait for it.

There is also a lot of useless discussion about what the Federal Reserve may do in their next meeting. This is before important data such as next week’s Consumer Price Index is even reported. Again, wait for it. Much will happen before the Fed meets again. It is always important to try to separate useful information from the din on Wall Street. That is what the Bull and his partners do every day. In the meantime, stay steady my friends.
